How to identify a fake text message Follow
You can't identify a fake text message that is coming from a VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) phone number, because they are indistinguishable from incoming texts coming from regular phone numbers.
Be suspicious of text messages asking for money, encouraging you to click on a link, or sending personal information, as these may be fake text messages sent for malicious purposes.
Be cautious about potentially fake text messages
- Is the text message possibly impersonating someone, like your boss?
- Is the text message from someone claiming they need money for an emergency?
- Is the text message mentioning an order you never placed, or a purchase you never made?
- Is the text message telling you that you won a random prize?
- Is the text message urging you to click a link, or download a file?
If someone is using a VoIP number from an app like Hushed, there is no connection to their name or real phone number. You will not be able to identify who is behind the text message.
What do I do if it's a fake text message?
1. Report the message as spam
2. Block the sender
3. Contact the authorities if you feel you are in danger
