What does NSF mean in text Follow
In text “NSF” stands for “Not Safe For…” and is shorthand for a warning before reading on.
Perhaps the most commonly used example is if someone writes “NSFW” (not safe for work). Heed this warning as it generally means that the content is inappropriate for professional viewing (think: explicit, sexual, violent, or even just too silly).
Similarly but more seriously “NSFL,” not safe for life, means graphic or disturbing. It is content that could violate terms of use and, in extreme examples, even contain illegal images or text.
On its own, NSF can be used as a generic heads-up that the following content might be inappropriate, explicit, or sensitive, depending on what word it’s paired with. In casual texting and social media, it’s almost always a content warning.
If you see someone drop “NSF” before sharing a link, image, or story, they’re flagging it so you know to open it cautiously.
