How to port a phone number Follow
Porting a phone number is when you move your existing number to a new provider.
You get the convenience of keeping your regular phone number, with the added benefits of saving money on your monthly phone bills, eliminating the need for a contract, and having the freedom to switch things up anytime you want.
How to port a phone number in five easy steps
- Select a new phone provider. Most people port their phone number because they want to save money or have more flexibility, which is why porting to a VoIP provider like Hushed is popular. (Our unlimited plans are just $4.99 monthly, compared to $50 or $60 with many traditional providers, and you can cancel anytime.)
- Confirm your new provider is able to accept your number. If you tell them the name of your current carrier, and provide the phone number, they can confirm the number can be ported into their service. Here at Hushed, we can accept most phone numbers from most providers.
- Prove you own the phone number. To make sure people aren't trying to mess with someone else's phone number, you will be asked a few questions to confirm you're really the current owner. Then your new phone provider will begin the process of requesting the phone number from your current phone provider.
- Wait for the number port. Your new provider will confirm once they have taken possession of your phone number, and it's officially on their service. (When you port a number into Hushed, we'll place you on a free seven-day plan so you can get settled in our app and decide on a new regular phone plan.)
- Choose a new phone plan. Once you have successfully ported your phone number, you can decide what phone plan you'd like from your new phone carrier. If you transferred your phone number to save money on your monthly phone bill, you may decide on a low-cost plan (like the $4.99 unlimited monthly plan from Hushed). If you transferred your phone number because you wanted an affordable way to hang onto a legacy phone number, you'll get the best bang for your buck from a 365-day prepaid plan.
